Task Update: Check in with your playground installer
March 26, 2012 / by shana_james
The playground installer will be coming to help dig the wholes for the playground equipment the wednesday before the build. He will also be present on build day.
See All CommentsHundreds of communities created videos showing why they need a new playground. Five of these communities will receive a $15,000 grant from Let's Play!
Watch NowA playground can be built in a day, but it takes months of planning and hard work. To get there, we've broken this complex process into eight key steps, or Mile Markers, as you can see in this road map.
Of course, planning such a large project takes teamwork. Within each Mile Marker, the Project Leader and eight planning teams, outlined below, complete key tasks, ensuring that no stone is left unturned.
If everyone on the planning committee follows the roadmap and keeps on top of their tasks, they will make building a playground look easy on the big day!
Flash required.
Building a playground doesn't happen alone. It is indeed a team effort. Find out more about the role of the project leader and all of the teams who work together to make playground dreams come true.

Task Update: Determine the type of volunteers to look for
We wanted to have about 10 skilled builders.. men and women that have experience building things or were strong. We also wanted a group of youth volunteers to come in and help build a garden and help set up all of the accessories. Not a lot of Salvation Army employees will be present.. just the ones involved with the project.

Task Update: Set a fundraising target
We will be meeting with our Community Action Board Thursday January 19 to speak about fundraising. We have a rough idea of $20,000 being our fundraising goal outside of the grants and money we already have. We hope to get some trees, bushes and benches donated to our project. We have started a budget and will revise and change with our Community Action Team on January 19.
Friday January 20- We spoke a lot about fundraising at our first Playground Community Action Team last night. A lot of great ideas were proposed and we came up with a goal of $20,000 that needed to be fundraised. The fundraising team will finalize on a fundraiser by the next meeting and will implement the project.

Task Update: Select build site and consider big picture tasks
We will be building the new playground where our old one is. We own all of the land so getting permission is not an issue. We are going to be checking with the City of Hampton to make sure we are not in violation of any zoning rules. A question that we need to look into is concerning where a playground can be built in relation to parking lots, a main road and our property line. There should be no issue since we are rebuilding over the old site but I am not sure if that issue was addressed with the old playground.
